Highlights from the Battelle 2022 Chlorinated Conference:

• Natural Source Zone Depletion (NSZD) is a critical component of a contaminated site conceptual site model (CSM). Examples range from assessing the lateral extent of contamination at early-stage releases, to providing sustainable remedies for long-term contamination. Although sites with impenetrable surfaces offer challenges for conducting these measurements, alternatives that are easy to implement exist for most sites.

• Innovative, sustainable, yet simple remedies are readily available, if supported by clear metrics. For example, a long-term study based on endophyte-enhanced phytoremediation demonstrated that nature-based remedies can outperform traditional pump-and-treat remedies.

• The rates of NSZD can outpace conventional remedies and can be used as a line of evidence to close contaminated sites. A panel discussion together with dozens of platform presentations, posters, and learning labs highlighted the importance of NSZD at this year’s conference.
