Fossil Fuel Traps

The most precise Natural Source Zone Depletion (NSZD) monitoring tool

Fossil Fuel Traps are sorbent-based passive samplers that measure naturally occurring biodegradation of Light Non-Aqueous Phase Liquids (LNAPL, including petroleum) by capturing the CO₂ emitted from contaminated soil and groundwater. They provide:

  • Multi-day, time-integrated average flux measurements to account for diurnal fluctuations.

  • Patented dual-sorbent layer technology to avoid atmospheric CO₂ interference with soil gas respiration.

  • ¹⁴C analysis to differentiate fossil fuel-generated CO₂ from modern CO₂ interference.

  • Decades long experience with petroleum contaminants, now also shown to be applicable to chlorinated solvents.

Clear Well

Non-Destructive UV surveys of LNAPL distributions in soils

Clear-Well is a transparent port surveyable on demand using a portable instrument. These repeatable surveys enhance understanding of mechanisms driving LNAPL mobility and stability at field sites under changing conditions. Our surveys offer:

  • Measure LNAPL distributions at the pore scale, providing quantitation of remedy performance, natural source depletion, biogas production, LNAPL mobility and soil geochemical changes.

  • Signals from white and UV lights on every location reveal formation lithology over layering the contaminant distribution.

  • Our proprietary software transforms digital images into depth-dependent soil saturation profiles.
