Repeated Surveys at a Field Site for Quantification of LNAPL Vertical Distributions

Objective: The purpose of this study was to do a proof-of-concept deployment of the Clear-Well system and develop quantitative data on the LNAPL distributions over the long-term.

Methodology: A field study started in 2023 to demonstrate the Clear-Well technology. Two locations were installed using a direct-push rig. Each location included a ~5ft long section fitted with a clear borosilicate glass tube. This was fitted within a 2.5” OD Schedule 80 PVC pipe, using custom watertight connections. The resulting well casing was deployed to ~15 ft deep below ground surface (bgs), with the clear borosilicate section at the 10-15 ft bgs.

Results: Each Clear-Well survey was processed with E-Flux proprietary software. Our software pastes individual pictures taken at each location into a single image for the entire surveyed interval, then identifies NAPL at each point, and generates a vertical profile of NAPL saturations. Multiple surveys have been conducted, revealing vertical redistributions of the NAPL in the soil column. Two additional locations were deployed at this site in 2024, and surveyed successfully. Field installations at other sites have been completed down to ~50 ft bgs, also installed with a direct push rig. E-Flux now offers the ability to stack multiple clear sections (~5 ft long each) within each well casing.
